Daphne Sheldrick Orphanage

Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

The orphanage is run by Daphne Sheldrick, the wife of the late famous naturalist, David William Sheldrick who was the founder Warden of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya from its inception in 1948 to 1976.

Every day of the week at 1100 Hours, the baby animals are brought from the National Park for a mud-bath at the orphanage. Thereafter for an hour you can get close to them and sometimes touch them. You may not feed the animals but will get a chance to view the handlers feeding them.

Private Baby Elephant View

The private session at 3.00pm allows you to touch the animals and feed them. This requires advance booking. During this time the elephants are fed with a special milk formula. Additionally the baby elephants are taken care of by their handlers who feed, wash, play and offer emotional support. Significantly this care will countinoe until they can survive in the wild and then they are translocated to different Parks and Reserves.

In addition, there is a keeper who will give a talk about the elephants, where they came from and their progress. You can get really close to the elephants. The orphanage also takes in rhinos and so if you are lucky you will get the chance to see a young rhino.

Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Center is situated in Langata, Kenya, about 5 kilometers from the city’s core. It was created to safeguard the Rothschild giraffe, an endangered species that can only be found in the grasslands of East Africa.

Jock Leslie-Melville, the Kenyan grandson of a Scottish Earl, founded the Giraffe Centre. When he and his wife Betty captured a newborn giraffe.

Consequently they begin a program of to breed giraffe in captivity at their home in Langata. Numerous breeds of Rothschild Giraffe have now been introduced into Kenyan national parks as a result of the program’s enormous success since that time.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi national park was the first park to be established in 1946.It is located approximately 7 kilometers (4 miles) south of the city centre. This is the only National park located in a city in the world. The only thing separating the wildlife and the metropolitan area is a fence.

Nairobi’s skyscrapers can be seen from the park. Indeed, the proximity of urban and natural environments has caused conflicts between the animals and local people.

However despite its proximity to civilization and relatively small in size for an African national park. Nairobi national park boasts a large and varied wildlife population. Migrating herbivores gather in the park during the dry season, and it is one of Kenya’s most successful rhinoceros sanctuaries.

Four of the Big five can be seen, the park can not accommodate the Elephants due to its size. Other animals include giraffes, antelopes, resident wildebeest and bird life. This tour takes four hours and includes the Nairobi Safari Walk. We have two daily departures open at 0600 hrs and the other at 1500 hrs.

This tour familiarizes one with Nairobi City with Shopping malls, Nairobi Museum, Snake park Parliament Buildings and offices. The tour takes about Three hours. The city begun in 1899, and grew as a central point for the Kenya – Uganda Railway. Nairobi comes from the Masai word, “Enkare Nyrobi” meaning the “place of cool water”.

The Karen Blixen Museum, located 10 km outside of Nairobi, Kenya, “at the foot of the Ngong Hills”. This is the former African home of Danish author Karen Blixen, famous for her book Out of Africa.

The Karen Blixen Museum is open every day between 9:30 and 6pm, including on weekends and public holidays. Visitors have the opportunity to take part in continuously offered guided tours of the house. In addition the house features rooms designed in both the original decor and with props from the 1985 film.

The grounds, which feature original equipment from the coffee farm, are also available for touring. There is also a gift shop. The grounds of the museum are available to rent for weddings, corporate functions, and other events.
