The Lake
Lake Manyara is located 127 kilometers west of Arusha town, which takes approximately 2 hours to drive. The park covers an expansive area of 330 km2, encompassing diverse landscapes such as dry arid land, forest and the lake itself, which spans 200 km2 and has alkaline properties. During the dry season, the lake nearly dries up, making it nearly non-existent at times.
The majority of the park’s land area is a narrow strip situated between the Gregory Rift wall to the west and Lake Manyara to the east. Renowned author Ernest Hemingway once described the park as ‘the loveliest I had seen in Africa’.
One of the unique attractions of the lake is its population of tree climbing lions, a behavior believed to be a response to minimal torment from biting flies while in the trees. Additionally, the lake draws in thousands of lesser flamingos and other large water birds like pelicans, cormorants, and storks, due to its alkaline nature.
The park is home to an impressive array of over 400 bird species. Visitors can also observe a variety of wildlife, including leopards, lions, elephants, blue monkeys, dik-dik, gazelle, hippo, giraffe, impala, wildebeests and zebras.
The Park
The Serengeti National Park is widely considered to be the premier wildlife reserve in Africa due to its high concentration of predators and prey. Covering 14,763 square kilometers (5,700 square miles) of grassland plains, savanna, riverine forest, and woodlands, the park is located in the northern part of Tanzania, bordering Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve.
The park is often divided into three main regions: the Serengeti plains, Western corridor, and Northern Serengeti. The Serengeti plains are characterized by vast, almost treeless grasslands where wildebeest breed and reside from December to May.
Wildlife
During the wet season, a large number of other ungulates also inhabit the area, and kopjes, which are granite formations, serve as observation points for predators and a refuge for hyrax and pythons. In the Western corridor, the swampy savannah is covered with ‘black cotton’ soil, and the Grumeti River is home to Nile crocodiles, colobus monkeys, and martial eagles, with the migration passing through from May to July.
The Northern Serengeti landscape is characterized by open woodlands and hills, and it is the best place to spot elephants, giraffes, and dik diks, as well as the migratory wildebeest and zebra during specific times of the year.
The park is renowned for its diverse resident wildlife, including the ‘Big Five’, as well as cheetahs, gazelles, topis, elands, waterbucks, hyenas, baboons, African wild dogs, and giraffes. Additionally, the park is home to approximately 500 bird species, such as ostriches, secretary birds, Kori bustards, crowned cranes, marabou storks, martial eagles, lovebirds and various vultures.
The Conservancy
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area was established in 1959 and later designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The crater is recognized as one of the largest calderas in the world and is renowned for offering one of the most spectacular game-viewing experiences in Africa. It boasts a diameter of 14.5 kilometers and a depth ranging from 2000 to 2500 feet, covering an area of 264 square kilometers.
The crater floor consists mainly of open grassland with two small wooded areas dominated by Acacia xanthophloea. The primary sources of water for the park are Ngoitokitok Spring, Munge Stream, and Lerai Stream. The best vantage point within the park is the flat-topped Engitati Hill located in the northeast corner, while the prominent feature of the crater is Lake Magadi, a large shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner known for its abundance of flamingos, hippos, and other water birds.
Attractions
The Lerai forest, a fever tree forest situated in the southern part of the park, is a great location for observing animals such as elephants, waterbuck and flitting sunbirds. The rest of the park is filled with swamps, thorn scrub, and grassland, offering plentiful opportunities for wildlife viewing.
The park is home to an estimated 30,000 animals and is considered one of the most densely populated wildlife areas in the world, notable for the absence of giraffes, topis and impalas. A significant attraction of the park is its abundant population of predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard.
The Ngorongoro Crater operates from 06:00 to 16:00, issuing only 6-hour safari permits for either a morning or afternoon game drive, with two designated picnic and toilet spots available within the crater.
