Ngorongoro Crater offers camping options through both public and private campsites, all situated along the crater’s rim. These campsites lack facilities, necessitating that tour operators bring all necessary supplies. Hot showers are provided, heated by wood fires.

The restroom facilities consist of a long drop toilet. Guests may visit the lodge’s bars and restaurants after dark; however, it is advisable to drive cautiously due to the presence of wildlife in the area at night. The breathtaking views of the crater are just a short walk away.

Wildlife from both the crater and the Serengeti often roam the unfenced campsite, so it is important to exercise caution. The campsite can become quite chilly and may be noisy during the night.

Our cook will position your tent in a comfortable and accessible location, and he will also safeguard your belongings while you are on a game drive. We will supply camping equipment, including an extra sleeping bag in case you forget yours. As Simba Campsite is a public site, you can expect to encounter other tourists from various tour companies.

Know Your Parks

A Bird’s Paradise

Lake Manyara is situated 127 kilometers to the west of Arusha town, which translates to a driving duration of approximately two hours. The park encompasses an area of 330 square kilometers, comprising arid land, forested regions, and the lake itself. The lake occupies 200 square kilometers and is characterized by its alkaline properties; it tends to dry up during the dry season, rendering it nearly non-existent.

Attractions

The majority of the park’s land area consists of a narrow strip that lies between the western Gregory Rift wall and the eastern shores of Lake Manyara. The renowned author Ernest Hemingway once referred to the park as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa.”

The park features a vast and impressive terrain, including extensive areas of groundwater forest populated with towering fig and mahogany trees, interspersed with acacia woodlands and open plains. A well-developed network of roads and tracks provides visitors with ample opportunities for game and bird watching.

The lake is particularly noted for its tree-climbing lions, a behavior believed to be a response to the discomfort caused by biting flies, which are less prevalent in the trees. Additionally, the lake attracts thousands of lesser flamingos, along with other large water birds such as pelicans, cormorants, and storks, due to its alkaline nature.

Summary

More than 400 bird species have been documented within the park. Wildlife that can be observed includes leopards, lions, elephants, blue monkeys, dik-dik, gazelles, hippos, giraffes, impalas, wildebeests, and zebras.

The Garden of Eden

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area was established in 1959 and subsequently designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. This crater is recognized as one of the largest calderas globally and is often regarded as one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. With a diameter of 14.5 kilometers and a depth ranging from 2000 to 2500 feet, the crater encompasses an area of 264 square kilometers.

Attraction

The floor of the crater primarily consists of open grasslands, interspersed with two small wooded regions dominated by Acacia xanthophloea. The principal water sources for the park include Ngoitokitok Spring, Munge Stream, and Lerai Stream.

Engitati Hill, located in the northeastern section of the park, offers the best panoramic views. In the southwestern corner lies Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake, which serves as a prominent feature of the crater and attracts numerous flamingos, hippos, and various waterfowl.

The Lerai Forest, situated in the southern part of the park, is an excellent location for observing wildlife such as elephants, waterbucks, and vibrant sunbirds. The remainder of the park is characterized by swamps, thorny scrub, and grasslands, which collectively support a rich diversity of wildlife. This area is among the most densely populated wildlife regions in the world, hosting an estimated 30,000 animals.

Summary

Additionally, the park is renowned for its high density of predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard, which can be challenging to spot without a keen eye.

Access to the Ngorongoro Crater is limited to the hours of 06:00 to 16:00, with permits issued for six-hour safaris, allowing for either a morning or afternoon game drive. Within the crater, there are two designated picnic and restroom areas.
